“2018 year’s show is called My Beautiful Circus and is a celebration of circus,” said Nell Gifford, owner of Giffords Circus. “Show director Cal McCrystal and I are asking ourselves questions; What makes the circus so magnetic? What is conjured up by the word circus? Why do we want to run away with the circus? What would the most beautiful circus look like? I hope that next year’s show will answer all those questions and more.”
On the 9th January 1768 near London’s Waterloo Bridge, showman, entrepreneur and equestrian rider Philip Astley drew out a 42-foot circle and filled it with jugglers, acrobats, clowns, strong men, bareback riders. This spectacle was the world’s very first circus.
“250 years later, circus is a worldwide phenomenon. There’s barely an art form that isn’t touched by it – from Sir Peter Blake’s circus collages to cutting edge performance art. Every schoolchild can tell you what a circus is. Many of us would secretly like to run away and join one.” Circus250.com
My Beautiful Circus will see gravity defying acrobats, rib-tickling comedy and the return of everyone’s favourite clown, Tweedy, and once again show goers will have the option of dining on rustically extravagant feasts under the stars in the UK’s only travelling restaurant, Circus Sauce, that tours with the circus.
The tour starts on May 4th 2018 at the home of Giffords Circus, Fennells Farm near Stroud then travels to Sudeley Castle, Daylesford Farm, Blenheim Palace, Oxford University Parks, Chiswick House and Gardens, Windsor Great Park, Stonor Park near Henley-on-Thames, Barrington, Frampton-on-Severn, Minchinhampton, Marlborough, Cirencester then returns home to Fennells Farm in September 2018.
Giffords Circus has a loyal following who return year after year – booking early is advisable!
